Addonis Parker’s work tells a story. His is a witness. There is no mistaking that his
viewpoint is hewn by experiences as an African-American. His works are like visual
literature that captures both the shape and the passion of the subjects he selects.
His work does not succumb to the urge to create art based on mainstream notions
of aesthetics. Addonis’ works goes against the grain and trends of abstract
concepts, the use of sanctioned media, like oils, acrylics or charcoal. His work
sets him apart as a witness of the culture, painting what is good, beautiful, as well
as social issues. All is an expression of his love for African-American life. He
provides a medium for preserving the often-complex reality of choosing life and its
challenges rather than its alternatives.
He records this love with brush, self-made wood panels and his choice of paints.
He is an excellent portrait artist. Images of children, young people and adults are
his consistent subjects. Images taken right off the streets of his neighborhood
expressed realistically on oversized panels, capture the spirit and emotion of this
current era. Addonis is a committed realist. He desires to render images of his
people that reflect strength, pride and hope. He chooses not to categorize his
work. “My work is in your face, raw, uncut and uncensored.” His art serves to
mentor youth, giving alternatives to low self-esteem and hopelessness.
His work is bold and intense. A highly skilled and experienced technician and a
profoundly sensitive artist, he is able to captivate the viewers’ emotion and express
the intended message. These messages are often expressed through the
language of strong emotionally expressions of the subjects painted. He strictly
adheres to visual rules of perspective and proportion, never distorting physical
features for reasons afore stated. The use of color to express the diversity of skin
tones of African-Americans is a signature of his paintings. His portraits are
rendered in great detail, which draws the viewer even deeper into the composition
and makes an even stronger statement.
Addonis Parker is serious about his work and understands the impact his
contribution as an artist to his community. He contributes time and talent to the
youth of his community, teaching art, working with youth on public mural projects
and mentoring. His is very sensitive to the needs of young people today
endeavoring to help steer them in a better direction. His talent has served as a
meaningful vehicle to accomplish these tasks. His work with the community
influences his body of work and serves as a reminder to all of the beauty of
African-American culture.
